With the ICT-enabled economic opportunities, the aim was to transition the Philippine economy into a digital economy not just in Metro Manila but in the countryside as well. Freelancer Philippines through Freelancer.com, the world’s largest free-lancing and outsourcing website with freelancers from over 247 countries, regions and territories was represented by Mr. Evan Tan, the Regional Director for Southeast Asia. He talked about how the online freelancing community is giving jobs to people all over the world just through the in-ternet, equipped with the right tools and equip-ment. The workshop was also highlighted by the talk of Mr. Genesis Reonico, the founder and CEO of Online Jobs University, where he reiter-ated how careers are made thru online training sites and become online Filipino professionals. It ended with the awarding of certificates and closing remarks from the City Mayor, Engr. Ronald Felix Alfelor.
The workshop which was attended by some 400 students and young professionals was jointly supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Information and Com-munications Technology Office and LGU Iriga City. It was aimed to provide meaningful jobs and other related opportunities in socio-economically disadvantaged areas where population is high but employment is low due to lack of investors. This is where ICT comes in, with the use of programs that push for the ac-cess to digital markets and rural BPOs as tools for job creation.
